Protecting the 11,987-hectare Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park requires strict rules. Because chemicals harm the cushion sea stars and coral reefs, visitors must plan their sun protection carefully before boarding a boat.

Can you wear sunscreen at El Cielo?

Most operators ask you to skip sunscreen in the water to protect the fragile marine ecosystem.

That request usually includes reef-safe and mineral formulas. Any lotion on your skin washes off into the shallow water. These chemicals degrade water quality and damage nearby coral reefs. You cannot use sunscreen in the water under any circumstances.

What to wear to El Cielo Cozumel?

Wear a long-sleeved UV rash guard or sun shirt while snorkeling.

Physical barriers are the only permitted sun protection. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes before arriving. For the 30 to 45-minute boat ride, bring a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to block the glare.

What else should I pack for the boat tour?

Bring cash, a reusable water bottle, and a quick-dry towel.

  • Cash: Bring about 200–225 MXN (about $10) (about $13 USD) for the mandatory marine park fee.
  • Camera: Bring a waterproof phone case with a lanyard or a GoPro.
  • Towel: Pack a quick-dry travel towel, as many tours exclude them.

Do the boats have changing rooms?

Most smaller boats do not have changing facilities on board.

Always wear your swimsuit to the marina. Some budget tours have no restrooms or changing areas at all. A quick-dry towel helps you dry off fast on the ride back to San Miguel de Cozumel.

What if I get seasick easily?

Take motion sickness medication before your boat ride begins.

Reaching the sandbar requires a 30 to 45-minute boat trip. Ocean conditions can occasionally get rough on smaller vessels. Take medication early if you are prone to seasickness.

Why is a rash guard important in the shallows?

The water depth at the sandbar ranges from just 3 to 5 feet.

Your back and shoulders will be completely exposed to the sun. You must float horizontally to view the starfish without touching them. A long-sleeved rash guard prevents severe sunburns during this time.
