El Cielo Sandbar

This shallow plateau is the main destination for Cozumel boat tours. It features 3-to-5-foot depths and a large population of cushion sea stars.

El Cielo is a sandbar located inside the protected Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. The water visibility frequently exceeds 80 to 100 feet on clear days. You will find soft white sand and extremely shallow water.

You can only access the sandbar by a 30-to-45-minute boat ride. Operators and park rangers discourage sunscreen in the water to protect the ecosystem. Wear a UV rash guard instead.

The Starfish Sanctuary

30 minutesDo not touch starfish

This wide expanse of white sand is home to dozens of cushion sea stars. These resident starfish can grow up to 14 inches across. Float horizontally while you observe them. Do not attempt to stand near the starfish to avoid stepping on them.

These patches of underwater vegetation sit on the outer edges of the sandbar. Marine life frequently gathers in these areas. Look closely at the vegetation as you swim. Hawksbill sea turtles occasionally forage in these grassy patches.

The Drop-off

10 minutesWide-angle photos

This boundary marks the edge of the shallow sand flat. The clear turquoise water transitions abruptly into the deep cobalt blue ocean. Swim along the edge to see the sharp color contrast. It provides excellent lighting for wide-angle underwater photography.
