FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Find fast answers about access rules, conservation laws, and tour logistics for El Cielo.

How do you get to El Cielo Cozumel?

You must take a boat. Tours and private charters leave from marinas in San Miguel de Cozumel. The ride takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Can you go to El Cielo without a tour?

No. There is no land access to the sandbar. You must rent a private boat or book a shared excursion to reach the site.

Is El Cielo closed in September or October?

It might be. The marine park occasionally implements 2-month rolling closures during late summer or fall. This allows the coral reefs and ecosystem time to recover.

How much does an El Cielo boat tour cost?

Tours range from $50 to $90 USD per person. Private charters cost more. Visit our Tickets page to compare current excursion pricing.

Can you touch the starfish in Cozumel?

Absolutely not. Touching or moving the cushion sea stars is strictly prohibited. Lifting a starfish out of the water causes it to suffocate and die.

Can you wear sunscreen at El Cielo?

Sunscreen damages the fragile coral reef ecosystem and marine life. Many operators ask you to skip all types, including reef-safe and mineral formulas. You must wear a UV rash guard instead.

What is the difference between El Cielo and El Cielito?

El Cielo is the 3-to-5-foot deep sandbar known for its starfish population. El Cielito is the neighboring waist-deep area where boats anchor for wading, drinks, and snacks.

How deep is the water at El Cielo?

The water at the main El Cielo sandbar is very shallow. It typically ranges from just 3 to 5 feet deep.

Are there stingrays at El Cielo?

Yes. Friendly Southern stingrays frequently visit the shallow sandy patches near El Cielito. Slide your feet along the sand rather than stepping to avoid startling them.

Do cruise ships offer excursions to El Cielo?

Yes. Many cruise lines sell direct excursions. However, booking an independent tour often provides better value and smaller group sizes.

What is the marine park fee in Cozumel?

The federal marine park conservation fee is about 200–225 MXN (about $10) (approximately $13 USD) per person, per day. It is usually collected in cash at the dock prior to departure.

Is El Cielo safe for non-swimmers and kids?

Yes. The water is very shallow and calm. Non-swimmers can comfortably stand in the El Cielito area. Life vests are provided on all certified boats.
