Packing for your tour
Preparation is key for boat excursions. Bring a long-sleeved UV rash guard, a swimsuit, and a quick-dry towel. Many operators ask you not to wear sunscreen in the marine park. Pack cash (Pesos or USD) for the mandatory about 200–225 MXN (about $10) conservation fee and crew tips.
Protect your electronics. Bring a waterproof phone case with a lanyard or a dedicated action camera. If you are prone to seasickness, take motion sickness medication before boarding. The 45-minute ride to the reef can get choppy.

Planning questions
What should I wear to El Cielo?
Wear a swimsuit under your clothes and a UV rash guard. Sun protection is critical because sunscreen is discouraged in the water. Bring sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for the boat ride.
How long is the boat ride to El Cielo?
The boat ride takes about 30 to 45 minutes from San Miguel de Cozumel. The exact time depends on your departure marina and the speed of your vessel.
Is El Cielo safe for non-swimmers and kids?
Yes. The water at the El Cielito sandbar is waist-to-ankle deep. Non-swimmers can easily stand and wade. Always wear the provided life vest during the boat ride and snorkeling portions.
